A Healthful Way of Improving the Look of Your Bathroom

An article about shower curtains made of polyvinyl chloride was posted in June 12, 2008 in the U.S. News & World Report. Here is a small passage from that report. "As part of an ongoing campaign against polyvinyl chloride, a Virginia-based environmental advocacy group today called on manufacturers and retailers to phase out its use in shower curtains. To buttress its case, the group, the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, released the results of a small study indicating that PVC-containing shower curtains are capable of emitting scores of volatile organic compounds, as well as phthalates, lead, and other potentially harmful materials, into people's bathrooms. A previous study, conducted by Environmental Protection Agency researchers, also found that plastic shower curtains can emit toxic compounds into the air."

Based from the result of this study, do you still want to take the risk? Why do you have to suffer from the harmful effects of those "PVC" or "vinyl" shower curtains? Try to consider using fabric shower curtains. They come in different colors, patterns and sizes. A 6'x6' size will fit the regular bathtubs. For shower enclosures, a 3'x6' size is appropriate. If you are concerned that fabric shower curtains will get wet, that's not to be worried about anymore. Most fabric shower curtains are coated with durable water repellency treatment. Treatment on fabric repels water and stains, therefore resistance to bacterial growth and produces a superior mildew-fungus resistant fabric shower curtain. But for cotton/polyester blends fabric, it is not as effective because of the cotton content that's why PVC free liners are suggested. The reverse bottom hem allows smooth water and soap run-off.

Just like any cloth, proper care goes a long way in extending the life of a shower curtain. A timely schedule of housekeeping procedures for rinsing and washing will help eliminate the possibility of mildew growth on any residue such as soap, shampoo, etc. left on the curtain. Just follow the laundry directions sewn into every curtain.
